Aaliyah’s discipline, warmth, creative instinct and unfinished promise remembered beyond the spotlight
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model whose brief career left a lasting mark on contemporary R&B, pop, and hip-hop.

Born in Brooklyn on 16 January 1979 and raised in Detroit, she began performing as a child, appeared on Star Search, and emerged as a recording artist while still a teenager.

Her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, introduced a poised young vocalist, but it was One in a Million in 1996, made with collaborators including Timbaland and Missy Elliott, that helped define a new sound: sleek, spacious, rhythmic, and emotionally restrained without ever feeling distant.

Aaliyah moved easily between music, fashion, dance, and film.

She performed Journey to the Past from Anastasia at the Academy Awards, starred opposite Jet Li in Romeo Must Die, and completed work connected to her self-titled 2001 album shortly before her death.

On 25 August 2001, after filming the Rock the Boat music video in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and eight others died in a plane crash near Marsh Harbour. She was 22.

Her influence has continued through artists who cite her understatement, visual style, and forward-looking R&B as a blueprint.

Aaliyah is remembered not only for what she achieved so young, but for the grace and creative direction that made her work feel ahead of its time.
